Some of these Grand Theft Auto urban legends are plausible, and have actually tricked a good many people into believing them. Others are a bit more absurd, but still have people that swear they encountered them in the games, and so their legend persists.

In the spirit of Halloween, we’re going to take a look at some of the creepiest Grand Theft Auto urban legends that have popped up over the years, and discuss whether or not they could actually be real.

Suicidal Photographer (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

The sheer enormity of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ensures that a good number of the GTA urban legends from over the years revolve around this open world classic. One of the more disturbing San Andreas urban legends, though, revolves around a photographer who is apparently suicidal. Multiple players have reported encountering a photographer NPC who snaps a photo and then walks into the ocean to his death. It’s possible that this is just a misplaced NPC who’s glitched, though it’s also possible that this character was put into the game deliberately by Rockstar to creep players out. Some footage of the San Andreas suicidal photographer exists online, so it does seem as though this particular urban legend is based in some fact.

Ghost Vehicles (Various Games)

Across many games in the series, Grand Theft Auto players have reported seeing “ghost” vehicles in the games that don’t have any passengers. These vehicles seemingly drive by themselves, and sometimes they can even get aggressive and attempt to run players down. The most likely scenario is that these ghost vehicles are just the result of a glitch, but that doesn’t make them any less creepy. One of the most notable examples of this is the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas “ghost Vortex.” Like the suicidal photographer, this particular Grand Theft Auto urban legend seems to have some basis in reality, though it’s likely just a glitch.

Ratman (Grand Theft Auto 4)

One of the most famous Grand Theft Auto urban legends is GTA 4’s Ratman. Tales of this elusive and powerful creature started to spread after a photo appeared online seemingly confirming its existence. However, the fact that virtually no one else has ever come into contact with Ratman, and that there is no mention of the supposed Ratman in the game’s files, means that this one is most likely a hoax. Even so, there is some slim evidence of Ratman existing in Grand Theft Auto 4, such as strange orange stains that can be found in the subway systems that some have speculated is “Ratman’s blood.” There are some video game easter eggs that take years to find, and so maybe players just haven’t figured out how to summon Ratman yet, but we think someone would have discovered hard evidence of Ratman by now.

CJ’s Mom’s Ghost (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

Carl “CJ” Johnson returns to Grove Street at the beginning of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas because of his mother passing away. Some San Andreas players have claimed to see the ghost of CJ’s mom lingering inside her home, or even walking through Grove Street at night. Others still have said that CJ’s mom’s ghost can be found in the cemetery. While it’s a creepy thought, no concrete proof of CJ’s mom’s ghost existence has been found, and so this GTA urban legend is almost certainly a hoax.

Bigfoot (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto 5)

Bigfoot’s presence in the Grand Theft Auto games is a little complicated. Bigfoot was a complete myth in San Andreas, but players could find a man dressed as Bigfoot in Grand Theft Auto 5. Some players have claimed that an actual Bigfoot exists in GTA 5’s forests, but this has yet to be proven. However, players themselves can transform into Bigfoot for a short period of time in Grand Theft Auto 5 by consuming the Golden Peyote plant.
