Fans of the series might recognize the Liberty City Penitentiary Coveralls as Claude’s prison outfit from Grand Theft Auto 3, which might sound like a good anniversary gift for veteran Grand Theft Auto fans. However, the decision to lock the so-called free gift behind the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition doesn’t seem to have been well-received.

According to the Grand Theft Auto Online section of Newswire on the Rockstar Games website, unlocking the Liberty City Penitentiary Coveralls is straightforward, but involves a fair bit of waiting. All players have to do is play any title found in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, including the remake of Grand Theft Auto 3, and then log into Grand Theft Auto Online at any time before November 25. After a brief wait, the Liberty City Penitentiary Coveralls will reportedly be waiting in players’ wardrobes within 72 hours of logging in again after December 2 rolls around.

While it’s a little odd that there’s so much waiting involved, this event seems to fit the existing pattern for online game tie-in events. The real issue appears to be that fans don’t want to buy Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition just for the Liberty City Penitentiary Coveralls. The title’s sloppy release has led to Rockstar Games’ reputation taking serious damage, and this Grand Theft Auto Online tie-in event may not be the way to restore it.

Other events currently available in Grand Theft Auto Online include doubled GTA$ and RP rewarded from work and story missions at the Diamond Casino & Resort, with an additional prize–the Red “The Diamond” Classic Tee–being given out free to players who finish The Diamond Casino Heist’s Finale before November 24. The Diamond Adversary Series will also be giving out triple rewards until the same date. Finally, players who log in this week will receive the Weekend Racer Livery for the iconic Bravado Banshee absolutely free.

Grand Theft Auto Online is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in March 2022.
