After canceling Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman despite exciting cliffhanger endings, it now arguably looks as though The CW was cleaning house to make room for a bit of a shake-up around those parts. The series, which is confusingly not connected to the upcoming game also bearing the name Gotham Knights, just got an official series order in the wake of concerns that it would be dropped along with the other unfortunate shows. This could be good news for those who thought the network’s mass-cutting of its series roster might not bode well for DC content.

Gotham Knights joins fellow new shows The Winchesters and Walker: Independence as the newest entries into The CW’s robust halls, with the latter 2 serving as prequel series for Supernatural and Walker, respectively. Notably, this season saw far fewer pilots up for grabs at The CW than most years, so these 3 already had pretty good odds at getting series orders. Still, even aside from the numbers, each one hails from some pretty prestigious source material. Plus, according to Deadline, the pilots themselves boasted some pretty solid execution.
Gotham Knights will reportedly center on a number of Bruce Wayne’s allies and even enemies, who are forced into an uneasy alliance when they realize they’re being blamed for Wayne’s death. A number of characters slated to appear in Gotham Knights have been revealed and hinted at so far, including mainstays like Dick Grayson (Nightwing) and Harvey Dent/Two-Face (played by Supernatural star Misha Collins). But it will also prominently feature some lesser-known heroes and baddies, such as the fourth Batgirl Stephanie Brown. Rumors have also been swirling regarding the possible inclusion of characters like Bluebird, Julia Pennyworth, and Duela Dent.
As perhaps a bit of a bone thrown to fans of Batwoman, it appears that several of its team members are on board for Gotham Knights, including writers Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams. This could also indicate that both series take place in the same world, if not at the same time. Of course, that’s entirely based on speculation. Still, for those who enjoyed the dynamics between characters on Batwoman, it could at least mean there will be more of that in the new series.
Gotham Knights has a lot of potential, particularly as a series so steeped in chaos from the very beginning. Here’s hoping it’s allowed enough time to really come into its own. It seems as though The CW isn’t necessarily the safest place for anything that isn’t The Flash or Superman & Lois lately.
Gotham Knights has not received a premiere date as of yet.
