God of War Ragnarok has certainly lived up to expectations with its stellar gameplay, level design, and story. The emphasis on family and the relationship that Kratos has with his own family is key to the success of the narrative of the game and has certainly left an impression on fans that can’t help but continue thinking about it. In an online post to the popular forum site Reddit, IndicationCreative64 posted an image of Kratos, Atreus, and Faye all together. The family portrait shows Atreus holding his bow, Kratos wielding his spear, and Faye holding the signature Leviathan Axe from God of War Ragnarok. Atreus appears focused in the image while Kratos and Faye seem proud. The title of the post even included a cryptic message about family that was actually a quote from the series: “We two, we three…what I alone can never be.”
Though phrased as a statement in the post, the quote is actually a question. One of the users noticed it from God of War (2018) and pointed out it was the question from the first puzzle in the game to which “family” is the answer to. Another user stated their joy for the absence of the Blades of Chaos since they represent trauma and burden for Kratos and pointed out how the spear was made specifically to protect his son. They also acknowledged the growth of Atreus in God of War Ragnarok.
Family has certainly been crucial to the series of God of War as whole, but it is particularly important to the Norse saga of the games. Since the reintroduction of the series in 2018, God of War has made the maturing of Kratos a key part of his character progression, and the relationship with his new family is at the core of that progress. The concept of family is even explored with the antagonists of God of War Ranarok, and is a theme fans could continue to dissect for years to come.
God of War Ragnarok is out now for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
